Are “Open Source” and “Microsoft” polar opposites?
In some circles, propensity for software that is "open source" reigns almost as rampant as a religion. I've even heard vehement disdain for Microsoft and much of the advancements the company has been pushing out as considered diametric opposition to "open source".
Is this really a straw man position? As of August 10, 2007 Microsoft submitted to the Open Source Initiative (OSI) two of its Shared Source licenses for review and approval as open source licenses – the Microsoft Permissive license and the Microsoft Community license.
Also of note is CodePlex, which is Microsoft's hosting of shared source content very similar to SourceForge. Clearly a community effort is embraced and supported by Microsoft, as is evident by reading the article on the OSI Submission.
